Pollution caused by vehicles has significantly increased in India, in recent years. Emissions from vehicles contribute about 290 gigagrams of PM2. Out of the total greenhouse gas emissions, transportation contributes about 5% and 11% of India’s carbon emissions. In Delhi alone, this data exceeds 30%. This has been the condition in cities worldwide. To tackle this, the government of India has promoted the use of hybrid vehicles or electric vehicles. In 2015, the Central government named the initiative officially which came to be known as the Fame India Scheme. Fame India Scheme or “Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid vehicles in India” is an incentive scheme that upholds the adoption and use of electric and hybrid vehicles in India.
What is Fame India Scheme?
Fame India Scheme is operated in two phases. They are as follows:
Phase I: The first phase of the Fame India Scheme began in 2015 and functioned till 31st March 2019.
Phase II: The second phase of the Fame India Scheme began in April 2019 and is extended till 31st, March 2024.
Manufacturers and the infrastructure providers of the vehicles are eligible to receive this incentive that comes in the form of subsidies. The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises launched the Fame India Scheme as a part of the National Mobility Mission Plan.
Objectives of Fame India Scheme
The objectives of the Fame India Scheme are as follows:
- The scheme upholds electric vehicle manufacturers and infrastructure providers to produce more electric or hybrid vehicles to tackle vehicle pollution in the country.
- The major aim of the scheme is to limit vehicle emissions which is peaking in the country. The statistics of air pollution in India caused due to automobiles stay alarming to date, especially in the major metropolitan cities of the country.
- Another aim of the Fame India Scheme is to establish and encourage the electric charging infrastructure.
- In a nutshell, the major objective of the Fame India Scheme is to convert thirty percent of the total transportation into electrically generated transportation or electric vehicles by 2030.
Now let’s look into the benefits offered by the scheme.
Features of Fame India Scheme
As discussed, Fame India Scheme operates in two phases (Phase I and Phase II).
Features of Phase I are as follows
- The first phase was initiated by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises focusing on four major keys. They are Demand creation, Pilot project, Technology, and charging infrastructure.
- The concerned authorities of the scheme were successful in launching 427 charging stations in phase I of the Fame India Scheme.
- An amount of ₹895 crores was allotted for the scheme by the government of India. More than 2.8 lakhs electric vehicles were also manufactured as part of the scheme utilizing ₹359 crores of the allotted amount.
Features of phase II of the Fame India Scheme are as follows
- The second phase of the scheme was majorly concentrated on the electrification of public transportation. They also focused on shared transportation.
- An amount of ₹ 10,000 crores was allocated for phase II of the Fame India Scheme.
- The ministry concerned aims to provide incentives in the form of subsidies to various categories of vehicles in India. Let’s look into the different categories of vehicles and the incentives provided for the same.
- Electric Two-wheelers: An incentive of ₹ 20,000 is provided to each of the 10, 00,000 registered electric two-wheelers.
- Electric Four wheelers: An incentive of ₹ 1.5 lakhs is provided to each of the 35,000 registered electric four-wheelers with an ex-factory price of 15,00,000
- Hybrid Four wheelers: An incentive of ₹ 13,000-20,000 is provided to registered hybrid four-wheelers with an ex-factory price of 15,00,000
- E-rickshaws: An incentive of ₹ 50,000 is provided to each of the 5, 00,000 registered e-rickshaws.
- e-buses: An incentive of ₹ 50,00,000 each is provided to almost 8000 registered e-buses with an ex-factory price of 2,00,00,000
- The government of India will cover highways and aims to establish electric charging stations on roadsides within a distance gap of 25km and between two consecutive stations.
- Phase II of the Fame India Scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles II) runs successfully with the establishment of more than 2700 charging stations in millions of cities, hilly areas, smart cities, and metro cities across the country.
- The grid measurement followed by them is a 3×3 km layout.
Statistics of electric charging stations installed under theFame India Scheme
As part of promoting electric hybrid vehicles in India, the fame India scheme has been launched byThe Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. Subsidies are provided to electric vehicle manufacturers and infrastructural providers. Under the scheme, almost 350 new electric charging stations have been established by the Government of India in phase II of the Fame India scheme. Bangalore, Lucknow, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Jaipur are some of the cities where the stations are installed. In July 2022, Honourable minister of state and heavy industry, KrishanPal Gurjar announced infrastructure for five hundred and twenty charging stations and also sanctioned an amount of Rs 43.4 crores under the phase I of Fame India scheme.
Benefits of Fame India Scheme
- The following are the benefits of the Fame India Scheme:
- Environmental issues and problems related to fuel conservation are approached by the scheme, thus reducing the pollution caused by automobiles in the country. This will also reduce the carbon emissions successfully cutting the greenhouse gas emissions as almost 8% of the greenhouse gas emissions are contributed by vehicles.
- People can avail eco-friendly public transportation as part of the scheme. This would also cost less for the citizens.
- The department concerned handling the scheme provides incentives in the form of subsidies and the vehicles belonging to different categories receive the incentives accordingly.
- The scheme aims at availing renewable energy to all individuals, thus contributing to environment-friendly transportation through electric vehicles and charging. Petrol and diesel are examples of non-renewable exhaustible energy.
- The establishment of charging stations in a 3×3km layout and closer proximity has encouraged people to opt for a hybrid or electric vehicles thus going green in transportation.
